Ontological Security and Iran’s Missile Program

This article attempts to answer the question of why Iran is reluctant discuss its missile program. Unlike other studies that focus on importance Iran’s program in providing deterrence for country and establishing a balance military power region, or view as one dozens post-revolutionary contentious issues between United States, this looks into ontological security. The paper primarily argues has become source pride Iranians, inextricably linked their identity. As result, Iranian authorities face two challenges when it comes sitting at negotiation table with Western counterparts: deep mistrust West, ensuing sense shame over any deal issue. Thus, officials opted preserve identity components program, return normal daily routines life, insist program’s continuation despite sanctions threats, emphasize dignity honor having empirically demonstrates how states can overcome feelings mistrust. It also theoretically proves physical security conflicts security, governments prefer former latter, based history nuclear negotiations. They appeal create new narratives justify changing previous policies.
